The final standings of the S1GP Supermoto World Championship have changed unexpectedly, with Austria’s Lukas Höllbacher now officially crowned the 2026 Individual Supermoto World Champion. Championship leader Marc-Reiner Schmidt has been stripped of what would have been the fifth world title of his career following an unforeseen anti-doping violation, leaving the German rider on four world championships.
“Recently, I was informed that one of the anti-doping tests carried out on me last season showed the presence of a prohibited substance. When I first heard it, I was shocked. This result is the consequence of an unintentional action. But anti-doping rules are very clear: every athlete is fully responsible for what is found in their body. I accept this. I respect the decision of the authorities,’ said Schmidt in his video on Instagram.
“This situation hurts a lot. It takes away part of what I achieved in an incredible year for me on track. But it does not change who I am, how I train, or how I race. I will use this period to work even harder, physically and mentally. My only goal will be simple: to race, to win, and to prove on track, race after race, that I deserve to be world champion.”
Schmidt also thanked his fans and supporters and confirmed that he will return to competition in the near future. As a result, spectators can expect to see the highly successful German rider back on supermoto circuits, including at the S1GP Hungarian Grand Prix, held from 4–6 September 2026 at Black Star Speedway Visonta.
Newly crowned world champion Lukas Höllbacher also addressed the situation in an Instagram post, summarizing the moment with characteristic emotion:
“I received a call that reminded me that patience, hard work, and honesty truly pay off. [I am a] Supermoto World Champion,” he wrote, accompanied by a tearful emoji.
“I am incredibly grateful to my team, my family, and my friends,” Höllbacher added, confirming that the championship outcome was altered due to a positive doping test.
